Frameless & Framed Shower Doors, A Cut Above Glass

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of maintenance should I expect on a frameless shower door?

The maintenance is mostly preventive maintenance. You can do this by using a tpc surface protector which fills the pores of the glass making it smooth and preventing hard water build up, mineral deposits, and soapy water stains. Using a squeegee daily will also help to keep your frameless shower door enclosure clean.

Should I inform my tile setter or contractor of what kind of shower I am going to install?

Yes, If you are planning on installing a European frameless type shower enclosure. Most tile setters are building the top of the shower curb or threshold level. With a European style shower enclosure the water runs down the door, hits the curb and should then run back into the shower pan. Make sure the tile setter puts the proper slope on the curb of your shower. The proper amount of slope is 1/4" drop per foot. Also make sure the curb is installed level side to side. If you have an existing curb that is not level, don't worry, we can install a clear polycarbonate and vinyl seal to the door or even add small threshold that will match your hardware color.

Should I pitch my shower floors & seats?

Leaks and standing water are caused by improperly pitched surfaces. All floors and seats should be pitched away from glass to eliminate leaks or standing water.

What if I am planning on using a rope or bull nose accent in my tile work?

It is best if the accent rope or bull nose stops prior to the door installation area.

Considerations when building neo-angle shower configurations.

Glass is measured at the centerline on the curb. A standard neo-angled shower configuration uses 135 degree angles. Any other angles are considered custom. Keeping with standard angles may avoid additional cost.

What if I plan on using glass tiles or glass block?

Glass tiles and glass block are both extremely brittle and prone to break or chip when drilled into. If possible, do not use either of these in areas that require drilling to mount hardware.

What to consider when planning for body sprays and shower heads.

Proper placement of shower heads and body sprays is critical to ensure against leakage. It is best to aim shower sprays and shower heads away from the glass enclosure and toward tiled walls.

Do I need to build in extra backing at the door hinge point?

It is best if studs are doubled up behind mounting walls, and should run to the full height of the shower unit.

Should I be concerned with the floor pitch on my step-down shower?

Pitch floor away from door inside the shower. Curbless designs should have a metal threshold for proper bottom sweep seal.
